Studying abroad

The "GC Study Abroad" program, which lasts approximately 15 weeks during the second and third years of university, allows students to study alongside students from all over the world and experience life and culture abroad. In addition to language learning, a key feature of the program is the opportunity to participate in volunteer activities and cultural experiences.

*To study abroad, you must meet the requirements set by your academic group, such as academic performance.
*Those who wish to pursue the Japanese language track can study abroad at Meio University, Okinawa International University, or Okinawa Christian University in Okinawa Prefecture.

    Studying abroad is the best way to improve your language skills.

    My desire to study abroad began even before I entered university. While watching live streams by overseas VTubers, I thought, "If only I had better English skills, I could enjoy them in real time," and that's when a senior student recommended studying abroad to me.
    J. F. Oberlin University The deciding factor for advancing to the GC group was the comprehensive support for studying abroad. The Chichester College I chose for my second-year study abroad was a dormitory where I could make friends from all over the world, which is one of its attractions. In addition to language lessons taught in classes based on proficiency level, I was able to choose and study classes taught by my favorite teacher.

    While I was there, it was commonplace for people to speak to me in English, not only with my dorm mates but also in my daily life, because they assumed that since I was an international student, I could speak English. I faced many challenges, but by interacting with so many people, my English skills improved, and I was exposed to diverse ways of thinking and values.
    Many people feel both interest and anxiety about studying abroad. To those people, I want to say that you might regret not going, but you will never regret not going. There are so many things you can experience that you absolutely cannot in Japan, so be brave and seize the opportunity.

    Make time to learn English outside of class.

    My experience in Singapore during a high school trip left a strong impression on me, so much so that I considered overseas universities when choosing where to study. However, the COVID-19 pandemic made it difficult to study abroad, so I shifted my goal to studying abroad and enrolled in the GC program, which required studying abroad.
    Although I wasn't particularly good at English, at the university where I studied abroad, I worked on writing in a variety of styles, including essays, book reviews, and letters to friends and family. In addition, I made an effort to create time to learn English outside of class, such as taking notes during conversations with friends, and I feel that this contributed to improving my English skills.

    With the kindness I felt in a different culture in my heart

    Making lots of local friends is one of my most memorable experiences during my time studying abroad. I'd casually make friends with locals on my way home from school and be invited to their shared house, and when we went camping, my friends even prepared a tent for me. Everyone I met in New Zealand was incredibly kind to me.
    Being kind to others is something I learned in New Zealand and has become a valued mindset even after returning from my studies abroad. I believe that the fulfilling time I spent overseas and the improvement of my English skills were all thanks to meeting friends from around the world.

    The hardships in an unfamiliar world are only at the beginning.

    To fulfill my dream of 'living abroad,' I entered J. F. Oberlin University. For studying abroad, which had been my dream since high school, I chose California, USA, as my destination. During the first one to two weeks, living in unfamiliar places and surrounded by strangers sometimes caused stress. Still, I gradually gained friends, and naturally, my English conversation skills improved.
    The English classes there had a unique style different from those in Japan, and I think my writing skills improved dramatically, in addition to my speaking skills. I often discussed the topics we learned in class with my roommate, which deepened my understanding of American culture and racial issues.
     

    A new me discovered in a new environment

    In Japan, I was shy, but through studying abroad, I feel I've grown mentally. I've become more outgoing, able to talk to people, express my opinions clearly, and say "no" when necessary. I had countless valuable experiences during my time abroad, such as making new friends at parties, going out with my roommate, and going to the nearby beach to watch shooting stars. Discovering things you love, places you love, making wonderful friends, and experiencing new things are big steps towards finding a new you. Little by little, you'll gain confidence and it will be the catalyst for you to start liking yourself!

    Improve your language skills by interacting with native speakers!

    As I aspire to work in the tourism industry, and with the increasing number of tourists from China, I believe that knowing Chinese will be a great advantage, which is why I am majoring in Chinese in the GC (Global Course) program. From the beginning of my studies, I wanted to go on a long-term study abroad program, but due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, I decided to try a short-term study abroad program that I could participate in even under these circumstances.
    At Tongji University, the schedule involved classroom lessons in the mornings and out-of-campus activities in the afternoons to learn about Chinese culture. A major draw was the ample opportunities to speak with native speakers, including local students providing support during classes. The afternoon classes included cultural experiences such as Chinese painting, guqin (Chinese zither), and tai chi, as well as group visits to various places, allowing us to enjoy experiences unique to studying abroad.

    My visit to China was even more positive, as I encountered many warm and friendly people. I was also able to experience the charm of the Chinese people's national character, which is different from that of Japan, such as their "culture of mutual assistance" where everyone helps those in need.
    Even in just two weeks, I could really feel my language skills improving, especially my listening comprehension, which increased through interacting with native speakers. This was my first experience abroad, so I was anxious before departure, but once I got there, I had a great time every day and quickly adapted to the different environment. I highly recommend studying abroad during university to broaden your future options.

    Students intensively study language skills and communication abilities through four language tracks: English, Chinese, Japanese, and Trilingual (Korean). From the second year onward, they acquire expertise in diverse fields through courses taught in foreign languages, leading to a globally active career after graduation.

    • Language Track
      In the first year, students intensively study the language they selected during application: English, Chinese, Japanese, or Trilingual (Korean). In the Trilingual Track (Korean), students aim to become trilingual, including their first language, by studying Korean in the first year and either English or Chinese in the second year.
    Building upon language skills, students will develop specialized skills that will lead to their careers after graduation.

    To effectively develop language skills, communication abilities, and cross-cultural understanding, we offer a variety of tools to improve learning efficiency, including English cafes and Chinese language salons. A major attraction is the campus environment where you can interact with many international students while still in Japan, not just for studying abroad. From the second year, students choose three Major: 'Public Relations,' 'Language Inquiry,' and 'Cultural Co-creation,' acquiring specialized expertise alongside language skills. We also offer comprehensive support for TOEIC® and HSK (Chinese language proficiency tests), which can be used during job hunting.

    To succeed globally, whether on domestic or international stages, it is important not only to have language skills but also to possess unique expertise that is a unique strength. College of Global Communication offers four language tracks to enhance language skills, as well as three Major to develop expertise through classes conducted in foreign languages. Support for overseas study and language proficiency tests is also well provided. From the 2026 academic year, Korean language will be added to the trilingual track, further expanding learning options.
