Early Childhood Education Major
Program Overview
The Early Childhood Studies major broadly covers adjacent Area such as health sciences, sports science, social welfare, mental health and welfare, and practical psychology, fostering childcare professionals with expertise who can support both children and parents physically and mentally. We also emphasize experiential learning and run exchange programs with local children and parents. Through such proactive and creative activities, we value nurturing not only practical knowledge and skills related to childcare, but also a rich human character.
Class Featured
Supervision of student teachers
This course builds upon the childcare skills and knowledge cultivated so far, deepening students' understanding of children and enhancing their practical abilities in preparation for their kindergarten internship in their final year. In class, students work with instructors who have experience as kindergarten teachers, creating childcare plans and handmade teaching materials that take into account children's development and feelings, and analyzing real-life cases of children. After the internship, students present their insights and learnings in group work and internship debriefing sessions, sharing them with each other to broaden their perspectives and deepen their self-understanding in preparation for employment.
Children's bodies and health
This course aims to improve the professionalism of childcare professionals and consists of two parts: "Pediatric First Aid" and "Research Methods." In "Pediatric First Aid," students will learn about accidents and injuries in children through case studies and aim to acquire skills such as hemostasis, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and the use of an AED in emergencies. In "Research Methods," students will deepen their understanding of sentence structure and basic statistics so that they can interpret academic papers on children's health. Furthermore, they will develop the ability to output accurate information by acquiring, analyzing, and presenting data.

Since I loved children, I was attracted to J. F. Oberlin University that each student had an advisor (full-time faculty) and offered early childhood education training (study abroad) in the United States, so I enrolled.
There are many fun lessons where you think from the child's perspective, and the teachers are very attentive and supportive, so I'm glad this Major was a great choice.
Having studied a wide range of subjects in my undergraduate program, I chose to become a ward childcare worker, spending my days working with children.

We provide childcare for children hospitalized in the pediatric ward.
I believe that being able to practice childcare in a hospital setting, where the approach to each patient differs depending on their individual medical condition, is possible because I was able to deeply study diverse forms of childcare during my student days, and because I was in an environment where I could study not only childcare but also general medicine, physiology, psychology, and other subjects geared towards becoming a ward childcare worker.
