Q.Are there any physical restrictions, such as height?
A.
There are no height restrictions, but eligibility requirements include "having undergone an aviation medical examination at a designated medical institution of this university and meeting the criteria for a Class 1 aviation medical certificate" and "not having undergone orthokeratology correction."
Q.Is there an age limit to becoming a pilot?
A.
There are no age restrictions for admission. However, some airlines may have age restrictions for their recruitment exams. Please refer to the recruitment information of each airline for details.
Q.I've mainly studied humanities subjects so far; is that okay?
A.
The qualities required of a pilot include broad knowledge, judgment, teamwork, and the ability to understand diverse values, which are largely humanities-based. In fact, more than half of currently active pilots have a humanities background, and a science background is not necessarily an advantage.
Q.If I enroll, will I definitely be able to obtain a license?
A.
While the university will provide full support to help everyone obtain their licenses, if, unfortunately, it is determined during the process of passing various tests that a student lacks the necessary piloting aptitude, training may be terminated on the spot, and if the training is conducted overseas, the student may be required to return home. Even in such cases, students can still pursue a university degree through other courses in the Aviation and Management program.
(There is also a system in place that allows students to transfer to other academic groups or departments.)
Q.Please tell me about life in Arizona, USA.
A.
J. F. Oberlin University Flight Training Center facilities in Arizona, USA, also offer boarding living just like in the rest of the country. You can eat at the cafeteria or cook for yourself. Through daily life, you will also develop interactions with various friends.
Furthermore, there is a shopping mall within walking distance, so you don't have to worry about any inconveniences in your daily life. In addition, our university staff will be happy to provide attentive support for any problems or concerns you may have.
Q.Are there any qualifications required to receive flight training?
A.
1. If your cumulative GPA up to the fall semester of your first year is below 2.50, you will not be able to remain enrolled in the Flight Operations course.
2. In order to participate in flight training, you must meet the following four requirements by the end of the spring semester of your second year.
(1) Obtaining the "Aeronautical Radio Operator" qualification
(2) Passing the written examination for JCAB "Commercial Pilot" and "Instrument Rating"
(3) TOEIC® 650 points or higher
(4) A cumulative GPA of 2.50 or higher up to the spring semester of the second year.
To meet these requirements, we have devised a carefully designed curriculum to ensure efficient learning.
Q.Are only students from Obirin University studying here? Are there other students as well?
A.
The Arizona training facility will be used as the training center for J. F. Oberlin University 's flight operations course, and it also accepts trainees from around the world as well as our university. You will interact with trainees from various countries and learn while helping each other. Including exchanges in the dormitory, it is an opportunity to develop international skills as a pilot and to make foreign friends you can make throughout your life.
Q.What kind of airplanes are used for training?
A.
In the aviation world, the aircraft you board is called "equipment."
Our university's training uses Piper's Archer TX (single-engine aircraft) and Seminole (multi-engine aircraft).
Q.If I get my license and graduate, can I become a pilot right away?
A.
Students who complete the entire course will obtain a "Commercial Pilot License (Multi-Engine)" and an "Instrument Rating" certified by the JCAB (Japan Civil Aviation Bureau). These are the basic qualifications for becoming a professional pilot in Japan. With these qualifications, they can take the recruitment exams of various airlines, and passing them will open the door to a career as an airline pilot.
At our university, we provide full support for our graduating students' job-hunting activities. Almost all of our graduates find employment with airlines as pilot trainees, and are working towards their dreams in the skies.
