By stepping off campus and visiting places where social issues are actually happening, you can learn about the current state of society that textbooks cannot cover. College of Education and Social Transformation students start working on projects from their first year, gradually developing the thinking skills to view various social issues from multiple perspectives and practical skills to create new value.

We implement "study tour type projects" in which participants choose a location of interest from several locations within Japan and visit the site (seven locations in Japan in FY2025), and "problem-solving type projects" in which participants explore local issues and challenges at multiple host locations both domestically and internationally (five locations in Japan and two overseas in FY2025).

Project location (domestic)
Island culture and understanding of the region (Nishinoshima Town, Shimane Prefecture)
Nishinoshima is a remote island with a population of approximately 2,600, located a three-hour ferry ride from Honshu. The goal is to proactively contact local residents, design field training programs ourselves, and gain an understanding of local resources, history, and regional characteristics.
Peace and multicultural coexistence (Central Okinawa Prefecture)
Okinawa, a place that experienced ground warfare and where U.S. military bases are concentrated, is home to people of various nationalities. Through experiencing Okinawan culture and interacting with Americans working at U.S. military bases and multinational residents of Okinawa, we will explore "peace and multicultural coexistence."
Community and school education (Ashiya City, Hyogo Prefecture)
We will explore the characteristics and nature of education in Ashiya City, Hyogo Prefecture, which has a distinctive educational policy, by gathering information through interviews with people involved in educational administration, outreach classes for elementary school students, and town walks.
Supporting reconstruction and creating local businesses (Minamisoma City, Fukushima Prefecture)
Minamisoma City was severely affected by the tsunami during the Great East Japan Earthquake. We will work on research topics in collaboration with companies that operate with the aim of realizing a self-reliant and sustainable community through the creation of diverse local businesses.
Children's learning support, safe spaces, and free tutoring (Sagamihara City, Kanagawa Prefecture)
There is a growing trend towards providing learning support for children who cannot attend cram schools due to economic reasons, as well as creating third places for them to feel at home or school. Participants will take part in these activities and work on research topics they have set for themselves through interaction with elementary and junior high school students.
Project location (overseas)
Vancouver Island, Canada
In the second year, there is an overseas program as an elective course. Students explore topics of their interest while immersing themselves in an environment different from Japan. In 2024, the program will be held on Vancouver Island, Canada.
