Visual Arts Major
Index
No separate courses. A learning experience that freely crosses over various forms of visual arts.
Visual Arts Major does not offer a "course division" that requires you to focus on a single specialty from the start. Its biggest feature is that you can freely switch between diverse Area such as art, design, video, and crafts, tailored to your interests. For example, "creating animation while learning Japanese painting," "challenging ceramics from a graphic design perspective," and "producing projection mapping that projects images onto three-dimensional sculptural works," enabling expressions beyond existing frameworks. After thoroughly solidifying the basics of sculpture in the first year, I designed my own curriculum from the second year. The process of exposing students to diverse techniques and perspectives refines their individuality and fosters the "flexible thinking skills" required in the fast-changing creative industry. With cross-genre experiences as our weapon, we carve out a path of expression that is uniquely yours.
Features of the learning environment
A learning environment where even beginners can learn the fundamentals of expression and build practical skills by accumulating experience in "creating things themselves."
We offer a highly flexible curriculum that allows students to experience various fields of expression before choosing their preferred area of specialization.
We cultivate creators who possess the expressive skills to firmly give shape to what they want to express, and who will shape the future.
The Appeal of Major
Our curriculum allows students to freely combine areas of interest and experience creative activities in various fields. Furthermore, we help students identify their future goals and individuality, and thoroughly hone the expressive and communication skills necessary for their chosen specialization. In the first year, all students acquire a solid foundation in fundamental expression subjects essential for all forms of expression. From the second year onward, in a small-group environment, students build upon their experience creating works in fields such as painting, sculpture, textiles, ceramics, graphic design, animation, media art, photography, video, and film, developing the skills necessary to become a creator.
Learning Visual Arts Major
The three visual arts Area focus on 'fine art,' 'design,' and 'video and animation.' In the first year, students studied a wide range of theories and practices across fields such as fine arts, crafts and textiles, design, video, and multimedia, and chose their own path to pursue. Since there are no course divisions, students can freely combine their interests and learn in a complex way, developing the ability to create new value.
Study art and design
You can learn a wide range of creative skills, from fine art to design. In your first year, you will thoroughly learn the fundamentals of color composition, digital editing, and drawing, developing the skills that form the basis of your expression. After experiencing various expressive activities that transcend disciplinary boundaries, from your second year onward, you will freely combine fields of interest from among painting, sculpture, textiles, architecture, graphic design, photography, and more to deepen your expertise. There are also plenty of opportunities for experiential learning, such as creating and presenting your own works.
Fine art and design that pursue the ultimate in captivating expression.
Fine arts is the pursuit of artistic value. Unlike commercial art, applied art, and crafts, only the quality of expression matters. Therefore, in addition to Western painting and sculpture, the curriculum includes a wealth of subjects that teach Japanese arts that Japan proudly presents to the world, such as Japanese painting, dyeing and weaving, and ceramics, providing essential fundamentals for aspiring artists. On the other hand, design is about planning. It encompasses graphic design, product design, industrial design, and more, including artistic and aesthetic meanings, and covers the vast world of design, from everyday objects to cities. Both are creative fields of expression that require students to create "visually appealing expressions" by utilizing their own individuality and sensibilities.
Learning about video
While learning about the history and theory of film and video, students will develop planning and expressive skills through video production. Working on projects such as documentaries, animations, commercials, and dramas, students will learn all aspects of film and video production, including scriptwriting, cinematography, lighting, sound recording, video editing, and sound engineering. Group work will also enhance communication skills and contribute to the development of essential professional skills.
Considering visual expression tailored to various media.
Activity details
What's important is the perspective of "producing".
Through diverse activities both on and off campus, this Major emphasizes not only "creating" works but also "presenting" them through exhibitions both inside and outside the university. A work of art only becomes true when it is appreciated. You need the mindset of producing your own work, knowing where, to whom, and how to show it. By not being satisfied with just a recital but also considering better ways to exhibit your work, you will learn how to "deliver expression" beyond the creative process. These activities serve as opportunities to deepen expertise while also fostering planning skills, collaboration skills, and an attitude of engagement with society. We connect music from "learning" to "practice," linking it to future creative expression.
