Features of the learning environment
In the practical classes of Drama & Dance Major, directing directors, choreographers, actors, dancers, and staff active in the actual performing arts field provide direct instruction. By learning professional experience backed by practical experience and the latest expression methods, you can experience firsthand the world of stage creation that theory alone cannot grasp. Even without prior experience in theater or dance, our curriculum is designed to allow students to learn from the basics with confidence. In particular, our practical skills classes for aspiring actors, dancers, and staff members provide careful instruction and support tailored to each individual's level, fostering the ability for even beginners to confidently participate in stage production. We have created an educational environment where everyone can feel their own growth.
The curriculum is structured into four Area: 'Theater,' 'Dance,' 'Stage Technology,' and 'Art Production' (including musicals), but you can study across various fields without course division. Additionally, numerous class performances and extracurricular activities are prepared to help students apply what they have learned in practice, creating a learning environment where students can pursue their own potential.
Learning Theater and Dance Major
In Area of theater, dance, musicals, stage technology, and art production, students systematically and cross-cultivate the skills and knowledge required for performing arts, planning and production methods, actors and dancers, workshop facilitators, and staff work. At the same time, students gain experience through creative work and workshops, thereby learning the power of "performing arts." From this learning, we aim to nurture individuals who can enrich their own lives while contributing to society.
Studying theater
In addition to acting practice using standard textbooks, students can deeply learn the fundamentals of acting from both practical and theoretical perspectives, including theater games, improvisation, physical exercises, and vocal techniques. They can also acquire knowledge of various forms of theater from around the world, including playwriting, directing, classical performing arts, modern drama, contemporary theater, Western theater, and Eastern theater. Furthermore, the program provides an environment for learning about acting for film and television, voice acting, and musicals. The program also emphasizes facilitation, a method gaining attention for developing interpersonal and communication skills.
Learn to dance
You can deeply study a wide range of dance genres, from classical ballet to contemporary dance, contemporary ballet, jazz dance, Japanese traditional dance, and community dance that connects art and society, from both practical skills and theory. Furthermore, the environment is set up to expose you to diverse contemporary forms of expression, such as hip-hop and theme park dance, which have become popular in recent years.
Furthermore, the curriculum includes comprehensive lessons that deepen students' understanding of the body, which is the foundation of dance, through anatomy and psychology, enabling them to dance safely and enjoyably while maintaining their own physical condition.

Learning staff work
Active professional staff teach the production methods necessary for planning and production, including 'lighting,' 'sound,' 'art,' 'costumes,' and 'stage management,' allowing you to learn current techniques tailored to the field. Additionally, there is a curriculum where students who have studied each Area can actually experience the progress of stage production. Through staff work, we deepen communication with others and collaborate on production, nurturing the next generation of staff.
Overall: Practical Creation "OPAL"
As the culmination of this Major learning, there is a practical program called the "Oberlin Performing Arts Lessons (OPAL)." This program aims to deliver high-quality stage performances that go beyond recital levels that are enjoyable for general audiences. Under the guidance of professional directors, choreographers, and staff, performers and staff students work together to perform in a full-fledged theater.

In recent years, there has been growing interest in leveraging the power of arts and culture for the benefit of society. We conduct activities such as theatrical performances involving the general public, outreach programs to elderly care facilities and welfare facilities, and workshops. Through these activities, we also train facilitators who plan and manage these events.
