Could you tell me about your area of expertise and what makes it so appealing?

My specialty is modern Japanese literature. I enjoy literary works from the Meiji to Taisho periods and early Showa periods, and I am researching works such as Junichiro Tanizaki. I am particularly interested in the relationship between literature and visual media, reinterpreting literary works within the cultural and social spaces of their time, and reflecting on the roles of people, society, and literature.

It's hard to ask what makes literary research appealing, but the main focus of literary research isn't limited to novels or poetry; if you set your mind to it, it leads to various academic Area, which might be the fun of literary research.

Please tell me how you spend your holidays and what your hobbies are.

On my days off, I clean the whole house. I let the robot vacuum cleaner dust and mop the floors, while I mop the windows, walls, toilet, and various other places myself.

My hobbies are reading (including manga) and watching movies and TV dramas. My favorite genres are horror, mystery, and science fiction.

Please provide a message for students and prospective students.

When I was in high school, I chose my target university for the entrance exam simply because I liked reading books and watching movies. I didn't have a concrete vision for the future, but my passions and interests eventually became my livelihood.

You never know what life will bring. What do you like? What do you want to cherish?

Nozomi Shibata

He completed his doctoral studies in Curriculum Education at the Graduate School of Education, Waseda University, earning a PhD (Academic). After working as a part-time lecturer at high schools, technical colleges, junior colleges, and universities, he became a full-time teacher (Japanese language) at Keio Senior High School, and assumed his current position in April 2026.
