Mr. Atsuko Yoshimoto

I like the music of German composer Max Raabe and the Palast Orchestra, and I listen to it often.

Could you tell me about your area of expertise and what makes it so appealing?

My specialties mainly cover three Area: (1) the history of educational thought related to reading and human development, (2) children's literature criticism and its history, and (3) issues in moral education in schools.

It may seem unrelated, but at its core, there is an interest in the question: "What meaning does reading have, and what has it been thought to mean?"

During my student days, I researched the children's book movement among elementary school teachers in Germany during the turning point between the 19th and 20th centuries. Recently, I have also become interested in issues of criticism regarding what constitutes good children's literature, as well as moral education questions about how to read stories as teaching materials and how to aim for moral growth.

Please tell me how you spend your holidays and what your hobbies are.

On my days off, I often borrow children's books and young adult literature from the local library and read them, or listen to music.
I love sweets, so I sometimes go looking for seasonal treats.

University is a place where you can discover your own "theme." I encourage all students to try many different things so that they can find what they love, what they can be passionate about, and what they want to keep thinking about. I hope you will experience the process of deepening your interests in your own way by interacting with many people and learning through specialized studies and extracurricular activities at university.

Yoshimoto Atsuko

Withdrew from the doctoral program at the Graduate School of Education, University of Tokyo after earning credits. From 2017, he has been an assistant professor and associate professor at Aichi University, and from April 2026, a professor in the J. F. Oberlin University College of Arts and Sciences Education program. His specialties are the history of educational thought, moral education, reading and human development, and children's literature criticism.
