Natural Area / Mathematics Program

Program Overview

While mathematics appears to be divided into various fields such as algebra, geometry, and analysis, these fields are intricately integrated and develop into a unified whole. Our goal is to observe diverse natural, social, and mathematical phenomena, analyze them using mathematical methods, and elucidate their meaning. Experiencing the joy of understanding various mathematical theorems during the learning process will be an invaluable experience.

Calculus II

Calculus is a crucial tool for describing and analyzing the changes in functions, and it forms the foundation of analysis. This course goes beyond high school calculus, covering real numbers, function limits, function continuity, exponential and trigonometric functions and their inverse functions, differential calculus, higher-order derivatives, applications of differential calculus, definite and indefinite integrals, examples of integral calculations, and improper integrals. The goal is to understand functions, limits, and differential and integral calculations in a rigorous sense, and to be able to prove fundamental propositions and theorems.

Specialized Seminar I

The number of people who dislike mathematics far outnumber those who like it, which is a significant problem compared to other countries. In Specialized Seminar I, we aim to encourage more people to enjoy arithmetic and mathematics by creating and presenting short stories that utilize mathematical thinking. We will also learn how to explain mathematical presentations clearly and accurately.

The main texts include "How to Cultivate Mathematical Skills for the Age of AI" (by Mitsuo Yoshizawa) and "How to Think Mathematically" (by Hitoshi Akiyama).

Mathematics & Education

I discovered the joy of mathematics and decided to pursue a career as a teacher.
Kanon Kimura

I originally aspired to become a kindergarten teacher because I love children and have always admired teachers. However, in high school, I discovered the joy of solving math problems, and now I am working hard every day to obtain a teaching license for middle and high school mathematics. While high school mathematics was mainly practice-based, university mathematics requires logical problem-solving. Rather than calculation skills, it requires the ability to understand formulas and theorems and to prove them oneself, so there are many difficult problems, but I aim to improve my mathematical abilities by working together with other students and sharing our knowledge to tackle problems.

Mathematics & Literature

Passing on the joy of mathematics, which was fostered through collaborative learning, to future students.
Taisei Asada

I enrolled in this university with the goal of becoming a mathematics teacher. Initially, I sometimes felt discouraged during mathematics lectures. However, it was the presence of my classmates who reminded me of the joy of mathematics. As a teacher, I hope to share this joy with my students through collaborative learning with their peers. I also chose literature as my minor. I believe that discussing interpretations of literary works will expose me to diverse values and improve my own ability to articulate my thoughts. To be able to stand proudly at the front of the classroom, I will first deepen my own learning while enjoying the process.
