Program Overview
The United States, a multicultural and multi-ethnic society, is a world leader in various fields such as politics, economics, culture, and science. "American Studies" is a program that provides a broad, interdisciplinary understanding of America as a regional studies area, while also allowing students to learn about international relations with America as the focus on a global perspective. Examining America in the early 21st century as a contemporary will foster an understanding of Japan and the world, and cultivate the ability to address challenges.
Class Featured
American politics and society
America is known as the "land of the free," but what are its politics and society like? This class will examine the mechanisms that drive American politics, the people and organizations involved, and the current state of deepening social division. In America today, even the basic questions of what freedom is, what democracy is, and what America is cannot be answered by the nation. America's struggles should offer clues to understanding the present and future of Japan and the world.

My major is American Area Studies, and my minor is Cultural Anthropology. I chose this major because I love America, and I enjoyed being able to learn about America broadly through many courses on history, politics, and culture. I was particularly impressed by learning about food culture and music in "American Culture." I think anyone who likes or is interested in America will find it very enjoyable. Cultural anthropology, which is studied over the broad span of human history, is also fascinating. I would like to learn more about things I didn't know before, such as the historical background of racial issues. In the future, I would like to work in a job that conveys the "present" of America to people in Japan.
