Associate Professor Oya (College of Arts and Sciences) contributed to the writing of 'Animal Phylogenetic Taxonomy'

The specialized phylogenetic taxonomy book 'Animal Phylogenetic Taxonomy,' co-authored by Associate Professor Yuki Oya College of Arts and Sciences, was published on September 8, 2026. This book, which compiles explanations of all 34 animal phyla into one volume, continues the legacy of the previous 'Animal Systematics (10 volumes in total, 24 books, 1 supplement, and 1 supplementary volume)' (the main volume, 24 volumes, 1 supplement, and 1 supplement), which was published over about 40 years starting in 1961. More than 70 researchers were involved in writing this new content for the first time in about a quarter-century.

Associate Professor Oya was responsible for the detailed discussions on 11 taxonomic groups belonging to the "planarians," which includes planarians and other groups within the phylum Platyhelminthes. Some of these taxa are being explained in Japanese for the first time. Like the old "Animal Phylogenetic Taxonomy," this book is expected to become a textbook and reference for many students and researchers.
