The mayor of Tama City visited the test flight of the new aircraft by the birdman club "CIEL"! He gave a strong cheer for them as they prepare for the main event.

On Saturday, June 6th, the College of Aviation birdman circle "CIEL," based at the Tama Campus, conducted a test flight of a new aircraft in preparation for the upcoming "Birdman Contest" this summer.

On that day, Tama City Mayor Hiroyuki Abe, who had expressed a desire to visit the campus to watch the competition up close, even though he couldn't attend the actual Lake Biwa event, visited the campus and enthusiastically watched the members' challenge.

"It's huge!" I was surprised to see the aircraft outdoors for the first time.

When Mayor Abe arrived on campus, he was escorted to the aircraft by three members of CIEL: Arisa Tabuse, the current representative; Tsubasa Hoshida, the next representative; and Yo Masuda, the pilot.

Mayor Abe had previously seen the aircraft displayed indoors, but upon seeing the actual aircraft assembled outdoors with its wings spread, he couldn't help but exclaim, "It's huge!" As he gazed at the aircraft up close, the mayor eagerly asked the students questions about the design details, the materials used, and the composition of the CIEL team.

The aircraft tested this time is a completely new model built to compete in the glider division of the "Birdman Contest" to be held in July of this year.

During the test flight, the CIEL members took turns supporting the aircraft as they ran at full speed across the plaza. Gradually increasing their speed, they made their third attempt. As the aircraft gently lifted off the ground, Mayor Abe, who was watching, cheered, "It's floating!"

The mayor gave a powerful cheer to the team members who continued their work, saying, "Keep up the good work!", making this test flight a great boost for them as they prepare for the main event.

The goal is to "break the student record."

Regarding this aircraft, representative Arisa Tabuse shared her aspirations with great conviction, as follows:

"We completely redesigned the entire aircraft, including the main wings and tail. We also rebuilt the cockpit, which we acquired from another organization, making it a completely original aircraft. Simulations have shown it can fly 400 meters. Our goal is to break the student record in the glider category!"
