Our university's application for the "Discover! Science: A Liberal Arts Thinking-Based Program to Support Science-Oriented Career Choices for Female Junior and Senior High School Students," which is publicly solicited by the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST), has been selected for the 2026 "Program to Support Science-Oriented Career Choices for Female Junior and Senior High School Students."

This program aims to cultivate female science and technology talent who will lead the next generation by increasing the interest of junior and senior high school girls in science and engineering fields and supporting diverse initiatives to encourage them to choose science and engineering career paths. In fiscal year 2026, there were 24 applications from all over the country, and after a rigorous selection process, this program was chosen as one of four participating institutions.

In the Japanese education system, a common problem is that students develop a dislike for science and math subjects upon entering high school, leading them to avoid science-related career paths early on. This project, "Discover! Science," aims to lower these hurdles and provide junior and senior high school girls with an opportunity to recognize their own aptitude for science and math.

A new approach based on liberal arts thinking
1. J. F. Oberlin University specializes in integrated humanities and sciences learning methods, offering programs that encourage discoveries that "Actually, this was also a science track!" from a unique perspective.
Hands-on support provided by university student mentors.
1. The instructors are experienced coordinators from the career support project "Discover!" and current university student mentors. They will provide support from a perspective close to that of junior and senior high school students.
A multifaceted approach involving parents, children, and schools.
1. In addition to in-person classes, we will also hold online courses for parents. Our goal is to have 1,500 female middle and high school students participate annually.
