J. F. Oberlin University The motto set by Yasuzo Shimizu, the founder of , is 'Gakuji Jijin ~ Learn and serve others.' Shimizu emphasized the importance of learning not only "for oneself" but "for someone seeking help."
Service learning is a type of course designed to put the principle of "learning to serve others" into practice. Fieldwork locations range from the area surrounding the university to disaster-stricken areas and overseas. Students utilize the knowledge they've gained in class to engage in social contribution activities. Furthermore, by moving between the university and the field, they can engage in experiential learning.
Community Service Learning Program
Service learning deepens understanding of social issues and their solutions through a combination of classroom learning and field activities. Its distinctive feature is experiential learning that values each student's five senses.
Overseas Service Learning Program
Overseas service learning involves learning about the culture and society of the visited location through a process of "pre-departure study → on-site training in the overseas field → post-return study." Each subject has a specific theme, and learning takes place through interaction and dialogue with local people.

Introduction to Representative Subjects
multicultural coexistence
The number of foreigners living in Japan is increasing. In multicultural coexistence courses, we learn what is necessary for "all people, regardless of their cultural background, to live together better in Japanese society."
Mongolian environment
Through field research and volunteer activities, students will reflect on environmental issues and deepen their understanding of different cultures through interaction with local students and experiences of nomadic culture.
Children and Education
Through interaction with local children and providing learning support, we explore the social environment surrounding children and the educational challenges that emerge from it, considering what education should be like in the future and what we can do.
Food and Agriculture
Through hands-on farming experiences, participants will learn about the current state and challenges of modern food and agriculture.
Introduction to Okinawan Studies
We will recognize Okinawa's history, culture, and social challenges, and consider the inequalities visible in Okinawa and the social initiatives aimed at supporting those affected.

Service-Learning Center
Service-Learning Center is promoting various Events and developing service learning courses so that more students can embody the principle of "learning to serve others." At the Service-Learning Center (SLC) on the first floor of Gakujikan, we gather various volunteer information and listen to student inquiries.
