Main content

An interview article (Part 1 and Part 2) with Professor Kazuhiro Taira of College of Arts and Sciences (Media and Journalism Program), themed "Media and Audiences in the AI Society," was published on July 17 on the website of the NHK Broadcasting Culture Research Institute.

As part of a series titled "Considering the Future of Television and AI," the theme of the first part is "What role should television stations and news organizations play in the age of AI?" While pointing out the potential for AI, which enables the analysis of vast amounts of data, to become a "new weapon for the media" in investigative journalism and other areas, it emphasizes that even in the age of AI, "judging the value of information" will be the lifeline of media professionals. It states that challenges will include developing personnel who can balance the efficiency provided by AI with on-the-ground experience, and exploring how to deliver information to viewers in the "age of AI search."

The theme of the second part is "Challenges of an AI-driven society surrounding viewers." While touching on the benefits of personalized news and information, such as "my own personal newspaper" made possible by AI, it also points out concerns about information isolation that goes beyond a "filter bubble" and could be described as "vacuum-packed." It explains how poor-quality AI-generated content buries high-quality reporting, creating a situation where "bad money drives out good," and also discusses the "value biases" inherent in AI.
