This year's "Night on the Galactic Railroad: A Choral Recitation Musical Drama" will begin soon.
Since its premiere in 2007, this production has enjoyed long summer runs every year and has become a beloved summer tradition at Obirin University.
Since its premiere in 2007, this production has enjoyed long summer runs every year and has become a beloved summer tradition at Obirin University.
This performance has three main features.
The first is "co-creation between students, citizens, and professional artists." Students and citizens selected through auditions, along with professional artists, will work together to create a work of art.
The second style is a "group recitation musical drama." Surrounded by live marimba and percussion music by Mayumi Hama, group recitation, acting, singing, and dance by Konami Sakata intertwine to unfold a galactic world unlike anything you've ever seen before.
The third point is its high quality. Its quality is in no way inferior to that of professional stage productions, and it has attracted attention from overseas, including a performance in Taiwan in 2016, and it received the "Children's Welfare Culture Award" in 2020.
Seated on either side of the circular stage, the audience may feel as if they have stepped into Giovanni's dream. We present "Night on the Galactic Railroad 2026," a musical drama featuring group readings, as a story for us living in the present, superimposing Miyazawa Kenji's prayer onto Giovanni's journey across the galaxy in search of "true happiness." Please look forward to it!

It's a 5-minute walk from there.
