The First Step in New Business Development: Towards Achieving Ambidextrous Management for Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises

Introduction

J. F. Oberlin University faculty, who offer College of Business Management and graduate MBA programs, have many opportunities daily to communicate with small and medium-sized business owners. Amid this, due to the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic, we have increasingly heard from companies expressing their desire to take on new challenges beyond existing businesses for sustainable growth and risk hedging. On the other hand, new business development and new product and service development have overwhelmingly few experienced personnel, so we often hear concerns such as "I don't even know how to approach it," "I don't accumulate know-how," or "It's a highly challenging task." 

Therefore, J. F. Oberlin University has launched the incubation project "KAIKA" to hold the first seminar to support incubation activities for small and medium-sized enterprises.

Graduated from Chiba University in 2010. Joined Benesse Corporation, a major domestic education business, as a new graduate. Engaged in a wide range of tasks, from customer service on the front lines, strategic planning and execution, to communication with management, including corporate sales, sales planning, management planning, business planning, research and development, global business development, and M&A consideration. Founded coto design Co., Ltd. in April 2021. Engaged in hands-on support for new business development and support for business and sales strategy planning. Currently works with a diverse range of organizations, including major listed companies, startups, higher education institutions, and NPOs. To provide grounded and realistic support, currently works as a parallel worker, belonging to multiple companies as a salaried employee.

In 1990, he graduated from the Faculty of Science at Kyoto University. In 1992, he completed the master's program in Physics II, Graduate School of Science, Graduate School of Science, University of Tokyo. In 1994, he completed the master's program in physics at the Graduate School of Science, University of Tokyo. In 1997, he completed the doctoral program at the same university. He has been active for about 10 years as a playing manager at a private think tank and as an executive officer at a small and medium-sized enterprise. Through practical work, he developed an interest in "innovation creation and its management," engaging in research, education, and venture support at public institutions such as the Organization for Small and Medium Enterprise Development, as well as universities like Waseda University and Tokyo Institute of Technology. In 2017, he became associate professor at J. F. Oberlin University College of Business Management, in 2019, associate professor at the Graduate School of Business Administration, and since April 2021, has held his current position.
