Degree Program in Language Education Practical Research
Diploma Policy
We aim to cultivate individuals who possess the following skills related to linguistics and language education.
In accordance with this graduate school's "Policy on Completion Certification and Degree Awarding," this degree program will award a Master of Arts (Language Education) degree to those who meet the completion requirements of a prescribed period of enrollment and accumulating 34 or more credits, and who pass the examination of their master's thesis or research report.
To pass the examination, you must possess the following knowledge and abilities:
- Theoretical and advanced knowledge related to linguistics and the ability to tackle research topics.
- This includes theoretical and advanced knowledge and insights related to language education and language acquisition, as well as the ability to tackle research topics. This encompasses specialized knowledge of language phonetics, orthography, vocabulary, semantics, grammar, discourse, and expression.
- Practical knowledge and insights related to language education and language acquisition. This includes not only specialized knowledge of language but also practical skills that take into account the needs of the modern era.
Curriculum Policy
This degree program is organized by organizing the curriculum by organizing a wide range of Area subjects related to linguistics and language education into the following units based on the graduate school's "Curriculum Organization and Implementation Policy."

① Characteristics of the curriculum
Students will develop their research methods skills through research methods courses offered within the "Language Education Research Methods" unit.
Through the specialized subjects in each unit, students can acquire advanced theoretical knowledge and insights into linguistics.
In addition, the "Japanese Language Education" unit allows students to acquire advanced theoretical knowledge and practical skills in language education.
Furthermore, it also provides training for Japanese language teachers and recurrent education (training) for current Japanese language teachers.
② Educational methods and implementation system
In the "Specialized Seminar," students receive guidance under the supervision of their research advisor to complete their master's thesis or research report. To enable students to engage in research proactively, research advisors share information with the instructors of the students' courses and provide advice on all aspects of the students' research activities.
In each specialized subject, presentations and registrations are introduced in addition to lectures to enhance students' critical thinking and communication skills.
We offer specialized courses in linguistics, creating an environment where students can advance their research in various languages.
To train Japanese language teachers, opportunities are provided for trainees to participate in programs at Japanese language education institutions both domestically and internationally as interns or teaching assistants, allowing them to gain experience and conduct research. Furthermore, the training of foreign Japanese language teachers is also being promoted as a key issue.
③ Evaluation of learning outcomes and research results
The master's thesis will be conducted as an academic research project.
Research findings reports will follow a similar approach, but with a greater emphasis on practical significance, they will be compiled as case studies aimed at solving problems related to the job content of employed individuals.
All projects are reviewed by the examination committee after an interim presentation and a final examination, and evaluated in accordance with the "Policy for Completion Certification and Degree Awarding" of this degree program.

The aim is to cultivate individuals with advanced knowledge and insights in linguistics and language education, as well as the ability to tackle theoretical and practical research challenges. It seeks to develop teachers with advanced practical and research capabilities, who will acquire a balanced understanding of "theory" and "practice" to meet the diversifying needs of Japanese language education, and to provide recurrent education for currently employed Japanese language educators.
