Degree Program in Gerontology [Doctoral Schedule]

Diploma Policy

The Doctor of Gerontology program places greater emphasis on originality in gerontology Area. Since it is intended for researchers in gerontology Area, university faculty, and those aiming for highly skilled professionals, study is based on the premise of master's program. Based on the acquisition of academic theory acquired in the master's program, students acquire the knowledge and skills expected of professionals and cultivate Higher Order Thinking Skills.
 
In accordance with the Graduate School's "Policy on Completion Certification and Degree Awarding," a doctoral degree in gerontology will be awarded to those who meet all four of the following conditions.
 
  • Those who have fulfilled the prescribed period of enrollment and number of credits.
  • Those who have passed the doctoral dissertation defense and final examination.
  • Individuals who can identify issues and provide appropriate solutions in gerontology Area.
  • Individuals who have the ability to plan and coordinate interdisciplinary research in collaboration with their own research Area and other research Area necessary to solve their problems.

Curriculum Policy

Based on the Graduate School's "Policy on Curriculum Organization and Implementation," the school offers specialized seminar courses with specialized research Area to cultivate highly specialized researchers with the ability to accurately study and clarify various issues of aging society from an interdisciplinary perspective, as well as high practical application skills. At the same time, by providing research guidance tailored to each field, the university has organized an educational program that fosters independent academic researchers or highly skilled professionals.
① Characteristics of the curriculum

The "Specialized Seminars" provide instruction aimed at enhancing the ability to identify issues related to gerontology and solve them using appropriate methods.

② Educational methods and implementation system
While the master's program primarily consists of lectures, the doctoral program is structured around seminars as its main method of education, focusing entirely on research guidance for the preparation of the doctoral dissertation. The "Advanced Topics in Doctoral Dissertation Research Methods" course, which is taken in the first semester upon enrollment and grants one credit, builds upon the research abilities cultivated in the master's program to develop the skills necessary to operate independently as a researcher.
By completing "Specialized Seminars I, II, III, IV, V, and VI" each semester, students will acquire advanced research skills and the rich academic knowledge that forms their foundation, while also preparing for the writing of their doctoral dissertation. Individual research guidance will be provided separately from the "Specialized Seminars."
③ Evaluation of learning outcomes and research results
The doctoral dissertation will be conducted through academic efforts such as researching previous studies, setting an original theme, and collecting relevant materials. The progress of the research will be checked by presenting an interim presentation of the doctoral dissertation during the "Specialized Seminar II" and "Specialized Seminar IV" courses, and in the semester in which the student is scheduled to graduate (as early as the 6th semester), the student will take "Specialized Seminar VI" to receive guidance for the final completion and submission of the doctoral dissertation.
The submitted dissertations will be evaluated in accordance with the "Completion Certification and Degree Awarding Policy" of this degree program.
