In an effort to provide opportunities to listen to real English outside the classroom, this year the English Language Program, a part of the university’s Department of Foreign Language Education, will continue to offer lectures in the ELP Lecture Series. In this ongoing series, each lecturer chooses an accessible topic and explains it in English which is neither too difficult nor too easy.

The eighth lecture in the series, “The Body and the Beat: from Beethoven to Beyonce,” will be held on Thursday, October 30. Why does some music make us dance while other music makes us fall asleep? Why do some songs make us cry while others make us laugh? Part of the answer to these questions can be found by exploring how we physically experience music and how our physical experience helps us decide whether we like or dislike different kinds of music. The moment that music hits your ears, it invites you to participate with it, and ELP teacher Anabel Hirano invites everyone to come to her lecture to learn more about how it does this.
