J. F. Oberlin University’s men’s kyūdō team won the 49th All-Kantō University Kyūdō Competition, held on June 15 and June 16 at Nippon Budōkan. It was their second victory in the tournament, the first having come nine years ago.

The team finished in a tie for third place in the preliminaries of the competition, moving them through to the knockout stage. In the quarterfinals and semifinals, they faced strong teams but were able to come out on top, putting them in the final against Nihon University. The team included three first-year students, who were competing in this tournament for the first time, as well as second- through fourth-year students, who have been encouraging the newest members of the club since the beginning of the season.

“It’s not as though all the team’s members were in top form all the time,” one member commented afterwards, “but by helping each other out wherever necessary, somehow we were able to win. We faced several teams—Hōsei University and Nihon University, for example—that we haven’t been able to beat for years, and when we won the whole tournament, some of us broke down in tears.”

Their victory propels the team into the All-Japan Students’ Kyūdō Competition, where they’ll be up against the best teams from across the country. The university’s women’s kyūdō team will compete there as well, on the 29th and 30th of this month at Meiji Shrine in Tokyo.

“We’re not going to sit back and rest on our laurels,” a team member promised. “We’re going to use our win last weekend as a stepping stone to the next higher level.” The kyūdō team looks forward to the continued support of the entire J. F. Oberlin University community.

Team members who competed at Nippon Budōkan included five students from the College of Arts and Sciences: Naoya Matsuura, Taichi Nakamura, and Hiroki Kaneko (all first-year students), Kunio Yoshino (a third-year student), and Takahito Hiruma (a fourth-year student). Also competing was Yūtarō Takahashi, a second-year student in the College of Health and Welfare.
