Nanako Watanabe, Vice President of the Songleading Club

I want to give it my all so that I feel like I don't need to compete anymore.

Deputy Head of Song-Reading Department
Nanako Watanabe, College of Arts and Sciences, 3rd year
Graduate of Meijo University High School, Aichi Prefecture

Having experienced the biggest setback of my life, I decided to continue competing.

I have been doing cheerleading since I was four years old. When I was in my first year of junior high, I watched Meijo University High School's performance at a competition competition we challenged as a team and was captivated by its appeal. The intensity of competing for points in competitions was shocking to me, who had previously enjoyed dancing with Events and cheering. My desire to challenge myself in competition never faded, and three years later, I entered the same school and started competing.

At that time, I dreamed of joining the official cheer dance team of a baseball team, and I planned to audition immediately after graduating high school. Therefore, the competition was a three-year limited challenge. However, in the last high school competition where I had given my all, I couldn't fully deliver the results of my practice and experienced the biggest setback of my life. I felt I couldn't just return to cheerleading in an ambiguous way, so I planned to continue competing from the very day the competition ended. Then, I was captivated by the passionate performance of CREAM, the J. F. Oberlin University song-reading club, and enrolled in J. F. Oberlin University.

A huddle before the performance. Savoring the joy of dancing with precious friends.

I believe the appeal of CREAM lies in our thorough research into every aspect of expression, composition, and choreography. For example, even with a simple move like extending our arms to the side, we all discuss and experiment, considering the coach's intentions behind the movement, the emotions we should convey through the dance, and even the meaning of the music and lyrics. It's a demanding process, but when the team comes together and gives it our all, we experience an indescribable sense of accomplishment.

Competitive sports may involve more hardship than enjoyment. Even so, what makes me glad I joined CREAM is the time we spend huddling together right before our performances at competitions. During regular practice, there's a lot of strict instruction, like "focus on stopping here," or "don't get out of sync here," but right before a performance, everyone is overflowing with joy at dancing together, and positive words fly around. It's the best moment when you truly realize that everyone present is an irreplaceable teammate, and that not a single person could be missing.

I want to acknowledge their feelings and be there for them so that we can talk as if we were on the same level.

Currently, I'm focusing on refining my fundamentals by intensifying my strength training and ballet practice. Towards my goal of winning the national championships, I've set gradual goals and am consciously working to improve my level little by little, but steadily, each day.

While the upperclassmen are primarily responsible for creating and running practice menus, as vice-captain, I make an effort to gather the opinions of the underclassmen so that the practices reflect the feelings of all the team members. I look up to the way our coaches interact with us. Our coaches acknowledge the hardships of practice and the physical pain we experience, and then say, "Let's push through a little longer." I learned that it's a great comfort to have someone who understands you and a place where you can vent your frustrations. As we move up in grades, we tend to forget what we felt as first and second-year students, but when we interact with underclassmen, I try to remember how I felt back then and speak to them empathetically, just like our coaches did.

The reason I continue competing now is because I want to give it my all until I can say, "I can end this without any regrets." I will overcome the hard training with my teammates and do my best to showcase the results of all my daily training at the national championships.

Meeting my teammates and coaches at CREAM helped me grow.
