The good thing is that, amidst the fun, they are serious when it's time to work and can also give firm feedback.

Cheerleading Club A Team Top
Miyu Fujita, College of Health and Welfare, 3rd year
Graduated from Komaba Gakuen High School, Tokyo

In high school, I was the vice-captain and team captain. But we weren't that strong.

Komaba Gakuen High School is known for its thriving sports like football, but cheerleading isn't particularly strong, and many students started out in high school. As an experienced student, I was put in a position to practice while coaching my teammates, and naturally took on the role of leading the team. That position wasn't painful; rather, it was enjoyable, and gradually, I started wanting to do cheerleading seriously at university.

One day, I had the opportunity to practice together with J. F. Oberlin University 's cheerleading club. Everyone seemed to be practicing so happily that it was memorable, and even among high school students, rumors circulated among high school students that while ○○ University's coaches were extremely strict, J. F. Oberlin University was known for having fun and maintaining a high level of skill. Moreover, J. F. Oberlin University was known not only for their excellent results in competitions but also for winning the Best Manners Award. The Best Manners Award is given to teams that excel in cheering for other teams and actively serve as tournament officials, and it also reflects the unique atmosphere of J. F. Oberlin University. If you want to enjoy cheerleading, J. F. Oberlin University. I chose J. F. Oberlin University without hesitation, where elite members from various high schools gather.

I was in the top position on the A team from my first year. But my biggest memory is "I caused trouble for the team."

Many members of the cheerleading club came from prestigious high schools, and at first, I was overwhelmed by their brand power and felt like I might lose. However, I was relatively confident in my physical abilities, so I was able to keep up with high-quality university training and was selected for the top position from the summer of my first year to compete. However, from the summer to winter of my first year, I made the mistake of holding everyone's feet during competitions and couldn't perform satisfactorily. Mistakes in cheerleading are not individual mistakes, but team mistakes. No one blames me, but I blame myself. Everyone encourages me, and daily practice is fun, but somewhere inside, I feel like I had lost confidence.

"I just have to strengthen my core as much as possible." The most important ability in the top position is an unshakable core. I stood on planks (straight, supported by elbows and toes) and balance balls, relentlessly training my core. I didn't show it on my face, but in the top position, where my failures were obvious, I secretly kept fighting the pressure.

In my second year, during the selection period to decide who would compete, I focused solely on doing my best without fear of mistakes. And so, I entered the Asian Games as the top position of Team A. During the two-day competition, I was able to perform without any mistakes. I was relieved to finally make it through the tough tunnel and regain my true self and confidence.

After the tournament, I was entrusted with the position leader of the top players and took on the role of leading everyone. In high school, I was the team captain and took on the role of leading everyone. I think I was able to do this because I had peace of mind. However, after entering the J. F. Oberlin University, I became so focused on myself that I lost the composure to look around, and for a long time, I realized I had forgotten to grow together with my teammates. During that time, my peer Saito looked over the team, identified challenges, discussed them with everyone, and took on the role befitting the captain. Even though she herself struggled with her acting and struggled. I felt sorry and began to support everyone, as if regaining the compassion I had forgotten.

Good teamwork is born from trust.

The cheerleading club's practice style is characterized by independence. Since the coach does not come to coach every day, students set their own goals, practice while thinking on their own, have the coach check their results weekly, and receive instruction. This naturally fosters independence and active team discussions.

Currently, I actively challenge myself with new techniques and aim to master them. I strive to be a role model for top positions and also coach my juniors. Especially for top position practice, many techniques like stunts and pyramids can only be practiced when there is someone to support them. Gymnastics techniques are not only exhausting for the top players but also for the base players, so if you don't maintain teamwork and concentration, there is a risk of injury. Even when everyone is tired, they encourage each other and gradually push their limits to challenge beautiful techniques. J. F. Oberlin University 's cheerleading club is a team with strong trust, having a strong bond of trust that transcends hierarchical relationships and enjoys cheerleading, but also performs properly, demands from each other, and can be strict with others. This trust also highlights the strength of teamwork. When I was in high school, I saw the seniors from J. F. Oberlin University and felt they all got along well and seemed to be having fun, which I think was thanks to this background.

I believe that through cheerleading, I have grown mentally and with perseverance. I think there will be many tough times in the future, but once I decide to see things through, I gained the confidence to overcome anything. Also, I feel that cheerleading is not just about trying to be positive and doing my best; rather, I feel I can show the unique spirit of cheerleading by caring for those around me, caring for others, and energizing my teammates.

Obirin's tradition is "beauty." This is the harmony that takes shape from the close relationships within the team.
