Sixteen students from five different parts of the world arrived on J. F. Oberlin University’s Machida Campus on Sunday, July 1, to participate in the Summer Session program.

Now in its second year, the Summer Session gives students the chance to study any two of six subjects: “Japanese in Action,” “Experiential Activities in Japanese,” “Japanese Management Style,” “Asian Business Cases,” “Japanese Culture,” and “Japanese Society.” Some of the courses are taught by J. F. Oberlin’s own faculty while others are taught by visiting professors from such institutions as Gakushuin University, Senshu University, and Rotterdam Business School in the Netherlands.

“Last year was the first time, and nobody had heard of the Summer Session yet, so we had fewer than half a dozen students,” said Fumitake Nakamura of the university’s Office of International Programs. “In just one year it has grown to 16 students, and we hope to get up to about 30 in the future.”

Ma Yorfy, a chemistry major from Hong Kong Baptist University, commented, “I love Japan, and I’ve been here with my parents more times than I can count, but this time, studying instead of just traveling, I feel like a new side of Japan is opening up to me.”
